The designer’s traits and music genre

Three posters with three personal traits I believe are important to being a designer.

CONCEPTUAL CONTEXT

These traits—patience, voice, and active, I associated with the music genres Lo-Fi, Punk Rock, and Psychedelic, respectively.

Music is not only able to evoke strong emotions and spiritual states, but also shares messages, information, and stimulates. Therefore, music can be considered as a form of communication. Music genres are categorized by their shared musical elements of instruments, contexts, lyrics, visuals, etc, and revolve around similar themes. It is possible to depict these themes as a representation of certain traits that are important to designers.

For example, grunge music is known for expressing anguish and sarcasm through the lyrics. Common themes include social alienation, self-doubt, abuses, and social isolation. This genre can represent the trait “expressive.”
POSTERS

Lo-fi, a style defined by use of low fidelity recording and experimental music, is known for live-streaming relaxing study tunes on Youtube. As this genre entails soft melodies while maintaining a constant pace, I matched it with the trait, “patience.” For  designers, it's important to be patient with their projects. Some works require extensive research, mainly projects related to political or social problems. The designer needs time to research, observe, and conduct interviews to find the best solutions and approach. This process requires much attention and patience.

Next, I associated the trait of “Voice” with the Punk Rock genre. Punk Rock is known for its fast and loud music, often voicing political discontent, revolutions, and change. Social criticism is very striking in this genre, and it's used to heavily influence and impact others. Punk Rock artists must therefore always be aware of the big roles they play in society. Designers have to do the same thing; they need to be conscious that their works often resonate with a lot of people—whether they inform, warn, or encourage going against the status quo. Therefore, the designer has to understand the value of the “Voice” trait and use it to share the truth.

Lastly, I connected the “active” trait with psychedelic music. Psychedelic music was inspired by the fundamental effects of LSD (a hallucinogenic drug), one of which is dynamization. Dynamization refers to an energetic, active form of perception that is constantly changing. Designers must share a similar effect, encompassing a dynamic, ever changing attitude. They need to be open to new proposals and be ready to adapt.
